The 2nd (2016) International Conference on Information Acquisition and Knowledge Service (IAKS2016) and the 7th Symposium on Search Behavior and User Cognition was successfully hosted at Wuhan University on 21-23th, October.

The conference this year, which was supported by Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC), was jointly hosted by Center for the Study of Information Resources and School of Information Management of Wuhan University. There are 9 information schools at home and abroad also initiated this important event: Department of Information Management of Peking University, School of Economics and Management of Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Center for the Study of Information Resources of Wuhan University, School of Information Science of University of Pittsburgh (USA), School of Information Management of Nanjing University, School of Computer and Information Science of Southwest University, School of Information Management of Sun Yat-sen University, School of Information Management of Central China Normal University and College of Humanities and communication of Shanghai Normal University.

More than 130 experts and scholars from 30 more universities and institutes in USA, UK, Korea or China, and editors from 5 important journals attended the conference.

Under the diverse development of Internet information services, aiming at constructing a platform for knowledge organization and service of Internet plus, this conference discussed the topic of information acquisition and effective utilization in the digital era and the research works on user-oriented knowledge service.

Professor Changping Hu hosted the opening ceremony, Professor Chuanfu Chen, Head of Graduate School of Wuhan University, Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Science Feicheng Ma, Director of Center for the Study of Information Resources of Wuhan University, Professor Ronald Larsen from University of Pittsburgh (USA) and Professor Jipeng Jing from Jilin University delivered speeches in sequence. Researcher Changzhu Huang, member of Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS)’s academic division, sent his greetings to the event.

The conference invited 8 scholars at home and abroad to give keynote presentations: Professor Ronald Larsen, Head of School of Information Science at University of Pittsburgh (USA), Professor Dietmar Wolfram from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (USA), Professor Yuelin Li, Associate Dead of Business School of NanKai University, Professor Kyung-Sun Kim from University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), Associate Professor Daqing He from School of Information Science of University of Pittsburgh (USA), Professor Miguel Nuens, Dean of School of Information Management of Sun Yat-sen University and Professor Dan Wu from School of Information Management of Wuhan University. Concerning data management, personal information management, innovative services, mobile retrieval, digital library evaluation and information science education, scholars analyzed information acquisition and knowledge service in the digital era and discussed its future development from different perspectives.

The proceeding of IAKS2016 has collected 57 professional papers, covering the theories, methodologies, technologies and newly developed applications of information acquisition and knowledge service under the environment of big data and new Internet. The conference consisted of three sections: theories and methodologies of information resources management in the big data era, security of information acquisition and information resources, and user cognition and information behavior. Paper authors respectively gave presentations of their research works at each section. During the conference, some foreign outstanding scholars were invited to attend the English seminar of Research on Knowledge Organization and Service Innovation in the Big Data Environments (NSFC Grant No. 71420107026), which is an international key project of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) hosted by Professor Feicheng Ma. On behalf of the project team, Professor Xiaojuan Zhang gave a brief introduction of the project proposal. Then Professor Dietmar Wolfram, Professor Kyung-Sun Kim, Professor Daqing He and Liang Hong delivered presentations on each section of the project. At last, scholars present offered constructive advices on the future plan to the project team.

Center for the Study of Information Resources of Wuhan University, which has a significant academic influence on information service research, is the only key research base of Ministry of Education of China in this field. IAKS2016 hosted by the center has symbolized the internationalization of information service research in China, which has contributed to international exchange, international cooperation on important theories and practices, and the socialized center of information acquisition and knowledge management.
