The SIM faculty Took Part in World Library and Information Congress of IFLA

From August 19th to 25th, Professor Fang Qing, the dean of School of Information Management (SIM), Professor Li Gang, the director of Information Resources Research Center, Professor Huang Ruhua, the associate dean of SIM and Zhou Lihong, the associate professor and assistant of the dean, went to Poland and participated in the 83rd World Library and Information Congress of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

The representatives of SIM joined several plenary sessions, sessions and seminars including the education and training of library science, linked data and information literacy. In the session of Digital Humanities and Digital Scholarship hosted by Knowledge Management Association on August 20th, the representatives of SIM introduced the achievements in school development, teaching and scientific research, and gave publicity to the English academic journal of SIM, Data and Information Management.

During the congress, the representatives of SIM discussed the cooperation with several top associations and related schools. After the talks with Lynn Silipigni Connaway, the president of Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), Lydia Middleton, the executive director of ASIS&T, Lian Ruan, the executive president of Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) and Shali Zhang, the dean of the library at the University of Montana, the SIM representatives established the cooperative relationships with associations including ALISE, ASIS&T, Information Literary Section of IFLA and ALA. In addition, the SIM representatives also discussed the methods and details of teaching collaboration with the organizations including the library at University of Illinois and Berlin School of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

In the publicity meeting and seminar held by IFLA Journal, the SIM representatives introduced the situation of the SIM English academic journal and talked with the representative of De Gruyter to affirm the publication of the first issue of the SIM English academic journal.

It was reported that about 3100 representatives from 120 countries attended this congress, whose theme was “Libraries. Solidarity. Society.” The visit of SIM representatives has further improved the popularity of SIM at WHU, and strengthened the cooperative relationship with the iSchools Organization. Professor Michael Seadle, the executive director of the iSchools, spoke highly of the 2017 iConference hosted by SIM in March, 2017 and called it “the most successful ever conference.”
