The founding ceremony of the Digital Humanities Commission of Chinese Information Society of Social Sciences in Wuhan University

On May, 25th, the founding ceremony of the Digital Humanities Commission of Chinese Information Society of Social Sciences (CISSS) was held in School of Information Management, Wuhan University. On behalf of Wuhan University, Professor Shen Zhuanghai, the Vice-Secretary of CPC Committee of Wuhan University expressed warm welcome to all the scholars in attendance and made opening remarks. Over 20 people including Mr. Huang Changzhu, the honorary president and commissioner of CISSS, Mr. Ma Feicheng, the head of the Big Data Academy of Wuhan University and senior professor in humanities and social sciences, Ms. Jiang Ying, the secretary-general of CISSS and vice curator of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Library, Mr. Lin Fu-shih, the researcher of Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica (Taiwan) and pioneer of digital humanities research, Professor Sun Jianjun, the vice president of CISSS and dean of School of Information Management, Nanjing University, Professor Cao Shujin from School of Information Management, Sun Yat-sen University, the vice president of CISSS, Professor Chen Chuanfu, the head of Graduate School of Wuhan University, Mr. Xia Yikun, the researcher and vice chairman of Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Fang Qing, the dean of School of Information Management, Wuhan University, Professor Huang Ruhua, the deputy dean of School of Information Management, Wuhan University, Ms. Liu Xia, the vice curator of Wuhan University Library, Mr. Huang Yuanhong, the director of Social Sciences Academic Press (China) and other expert scholars, as well as the members of Digital Humanities Commission attended the ceremony. Mr. Fu Xingrong, the secretary of CPC Committee of our school presided over the ceremony.

In the ceremony, Ms. Jiang Ying, the vice president and secretary of CISSS, on behalf of the CISSS, announced the founding decision and member list of the Digital Humanities Commission. After the secret ballot of all the CISSS members, the first director of the Digital Humanities Commission was Professor Fang Qing, the dean of our school, and the vice director was Professor Wang Xiaoguang, who was also the vice director of the Center of the Studies for Information Resources, Wuhan University. The members included Professor Wei Jingzhu from School of Information Management, Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Xu Xin, the deputy dean of School of Public Policy and Management, East China Normal University, Professor Zhao Yuxiang from School of Economics and Management, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Mr. Chen Wenguang, the associate professor from Department of Information Management, Peking University, Mr. Pei Lei, the associate professor from School of Information Management, Nanjing University, Mr. Xia Pingsheng, the vice researcher and vice director of Information Center of Duanghuang Academy, Ms. Xia Cuijuan, the senior engineer from Shanghai Library, Mr. Niu Li, the associate professor from School of Information Resource Management, Renmin University of China, as well as Ms. Xu Yanan, the vice editor of Information and Documentation Services. Mr. Huang Changzhu, the honorary president of CISSS and Ms. Jiang Ying gave out the certificates to the members together.

Professor Wang Xiaoguang hosted the keynote speech session. Mr. Lin Fu-shih, the researcher and director of the Center for Digital Cultures, Academia Sinica (Taiwan) revolved around “Digital Humanities in Taiwan” to make a tremendous speech to all the scholars and guests. He had a detailed indication of the history and concept of digital humanities, digital humanities research organizations and academic communities home and abroad, as well as the development process of digital humanities around the world. He thought Library and Information Studies could play an important role in digital humanities as the cross-discipline research scope of digital technologies and the humanities.

In the discussion session, the scholars made their ideas and suggestions on the anticipation of the Digital Humanities Commission and the follow-up development of digital humanities studies. Professor Sun Jianjun suggested that the Digital Humanities Commission should develop according to national strategies, improve the basic facilities of digital resources, and extend the integration and sharing of each digital humanities platform. It was suggested by Professor Cao Shujin that the studies of information organizations should be combined with the development need of digital humanities. Mr. Xia Pingsheng introduced the long-term digital preservation and digital asset management of the “Digital Dunhuang” program, as well as its application in the concept of digital humanities. Professor Wei Jingzhu, Professor Zhao Yuxiang, Ms. Liu Xia, Ms. Xia Cuijuan and other members of Digital Humanities Commission all expressed their opinions, and they agreed to strengthen the studies of digital humanities and increase the voice of Library and Information Studies in the field of digital humanities.

It is known that School of Information Management as the secretariat of the Digital Humanities Commission founded the first research center of the digital humanities in 2011, namely, Center for Digital Humanities, Wuhan University. This Center as one of the first 5 members of Asia-Pacific Digital Humanities Centernet, is a cross-discipline research platform and engages itself in exploring the creative application paths and methods of all the digital and information technologies in the production, dissemination and teaching of the knowledge of the humanities, as well as the paradigm innovation of data-driven studies of humanities and social sciences. The Center focused on the digitalization, datumization and semantic processing of documentation and digital heritage resources in the field of the Humanities and that of libraries, archives centers as well as museums. The concentration is also on the theories, methodology and technologies of smart data (heterogeneous data and knowledge spectrum data), the semantic publishing of academic literature and the linked data mining, the building of the humanities and social sciences data resources and analysis platform, as well as the need and adoption of information technologies and digital publications of the scholars engaged in the humanities and social sciences, including not only the academic research, but program practice, teaching and transformation of scientific and research results.

The members of the Center for Digital Humanities, Wuhan University come from many a academic organization, including School of Information Management, the Center of the Studies for Information Resources (the MOE Project of Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Universities), State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Computer School, College of Chinese Language and Literature, School of History, National Institute of Cultural Development, etc. The central members have rich scientific and research experience in digital asset management, documentary information organization, ontology design of cultural heritages, scientific knowledge spectrum, scientific and research data integration, 3D modeling of cultural relics, deep learning of images, big data analysis of academic users, and undertake lots of important scientific and research projects, including the Major Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation of China, the National Basic Research Program, the National High Technology Research and Development Program, as well as the National Key R&D Program. The Center has established the long-term communicative and cooperative relationship with many world-renowned organizations of digital humanities and cultural heritage protection, including UCL Centre for Digital Humanities, the Center for Digital Cultures, Academia Sinica (Taiwan) and Dunhuang Academy of China.
