This book systematically introduced the basic knowledge and up-to-date research achievements of information science in the form of encyclopedia entries, including thirteen branches of information science, such as information theory, information sources, information exchange, information organization, information retrieval, information service, information research, competitive intelligence, information technology, information management, knowledge management, information career management, intelligence agencies and people. The book is a modern collection encyclopedia, which is interactive, readable, retrievable, appreciative and collectible. The paper version includes 1,500 entries, which are about 1.57 million words totally.

The two key breakthroughs of the book are as followings:

In terms of volume scale, information science was published for the first time as a single volume of the paper version ofEncyclopedia of China. Among the 74 volumes in the first edition ofEncyclopedia of China, information science, library science and archives science was published as one volume. In the second edition, it was integrated with dozens of other disciplines into a comprehensive encyclopedia with 32 volumes. In the third edition ofEncyclopedia of China, information science was established as an independent executive discipline, and published as a single volume, highlighting the increasingly discipline status of information science and its increasingly important role in national defense, national policy, national economy and people's livelihood and information society.

In terms of publishing time, information science has achieved the first publication among nearly one hundred executive disciplines of the third edition of Encyclopedia, and is one of the first five volumes of the third edition of Encyclopedia. It has given priority to the national task of online edition and paper edition, and achieved double results. This is the result of the efforts of the information science community, which embodies the wisdom and painstaking efforts of the editorial board of information science and all the authors.

Experts and scholars from Renmin University of China, Peking University, Wuhan University, Nanjing University, Nankai University, Sun Yat-sen University, Jilin University, Encyclopedia of China Publishing House, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China, Military Science Information Research Center and nearly 1,000 participants, journalists from China News Service and Guangming Daily, editors-in-chief of journals such as Journal of the China Society for Scientific and Technical Information (in Chinese), Library And Information Service (in Chinese) etc. watched the publication ceremony.
